Organic Gardening Indoors

For those of you that do not have the luxury of a large outdoor space to grow your own organic food… here are some tips for growing an abundance of yummy vegetable indoors.

The first thing to do is choose your pots that you will use to grow your vegetables in.

There is a wide variety of pots. Some are large. Others are small. And some are medium. They can be round, square, rectangular… They can be made of stone, terra-cotta, glass, metal, and plastic.

Usually, most people gravitate towards the classic style of stone or terra-cotta. If that is your choice… there are some things to consider. First, although stone is strong and well-built, it is also heavy. And if you are planning to move the pot around to get more sunlight, you will need someone to assist you, especially if it is a larger pot. Another thing to consider is that stone pots are really good at holding the water in so you would have to be really careful to achieve the right balance of water… not too much and not too little.

The terra-cotta pot is more delicate and easy to break. It is also lighter and easier to move around without help. And usually the water in them dries out quickly. So you would have to take care that your plants get enough water but not too much.

Another choice that works very well is the use of plastic pots. Many of them now have the water reservoir underneath that you can put extra water in and allow the plant to soak up what it need. I also water the plant soil in the pot and then put the extra water underneath… just in case the plant gets thirsty. It is also very helpful if you travel…

What about the Soil for the Pots?

The best formula for the potting soil for your indoor vegetables is to use a mixture of potting mix and compost that you can pick up from the garden center of your local shopping center.

Your formula should contain about 65% potting mixture and 35% compost. Don’t use the soil from your yard.

Moisten your soil compost mixture before putting it into the pots. Then fill them with the mixture and plant your vegetable… either the seeds, or the actual small plant that you picked up from your local garden center.

Later when you plant is growing; you can use one of the liquid plant foods for the plant. Make sure you use one that includes kelp! Don’t over use the plant food though. Mix it with the water you put on your plant… once every two weeks would be good enough.

Some Final Tips

Keep the vegetables and flowers looking good. Remove any dried up leaves by gently cutting them off.

Observe your plants…vegetables and flowers, and make sure you are giving them the right amount of water. Not too much and not too little.

Test your plant’s soil by touching the soil with one finger to see if it feels soft and slightly moist or if it feels dry. And, of course, if it feels dry give it some water!

Water them early in the morning time. I was told by a long time, awesome gardener that indoor plants can’t drink water after 4 p.m. and if you give them water then or later… their roots will rot and they will die. So be on the safe side and don’t water your plants after 2 p.m.

Choose the size of your pots based on which vegetables you will be planting in them. Give them enough space to grow.

Make sure you choose pots with holes in the bottom for proper drainage.

Talk to your vegetables and flowers, they are living things and will grow better. Classical music also helps. :-)
