Everyone wants healthy seed for keeps. But, how can you get healthy one? Here are some tips:

  1. Vegetables such as tomatoes, squashes and melons, are fleshy; hence, their seeds should be picked up when they are fully ripe. After scooping the seeds, you should spread them out on a dry place.
  2. Beans, peas and corns are left to dry before their seeds are taken.
  3. Some fruits and vegetable have to be fully formed and meaty before gathering their seeds.
  4. Select seeds from the healthiest ones!
  5. Gather seeds from the most vigorous plants you have rather than those you just happen to see in your garden.
  6. Make sure that every seed you gather is mature enough to be saved.

Cleaning Wet And Dry Seeds

After carefully selecting and gathering your seeds, it is essential for you to clean them up and to store them properly. The methods for cleaning wet and dry seeds differ from each other.  However, cleaning dry seeds involves washing and drying them out whereas cleaning wet seeds requires a process aside from that. With that, how to clean wet seeds?

  1. Wet seeds undergo fermentation process. During this process, yeast and other microorganisms are destroyed.
  2. Wash the seeds. The seeds and the pulp are placed in a basin filled with water. Viable seeds sink under the water while those with poor quality float. Strain the seeds after stirring vigorously.
  3. Dry the seeds. Spread the seeds onto a glass or plywood surface. But do not put them into an oven or expose them under the sun.
